Thyroid Cancer Risk in Childhood Cancer Survivors
The risk of thyroid cancer in childhood cancer survivors appears to be relatively high, according to British research. Risk of thyroid cancer was highest after Hodgkin’s disease (relative risk, 3.3) and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (relative risk, 3.4) when compared with leukemia (relative risk, 1.0). The authors report that their results may be useful when counseling survivors of childhood cancer who have been exposed to radiation in or around the thyroid area.
