The Impact of Pernicious Anemia on Hip Fracture
Patients with a diagnosis of pernicious anemia (PA) appear to have an elevated risk of hip fracture when compared with those without the blood disorder, according to a University of Pennsylvania study. The increase in hip fracture risk was even more pronounced among patients newly diagnosed with PA during follow-up and persisted even years after vitamin B12 therapy. “Chronic achlorhydria could be the mechanism contributing to the persistently elevated hip fracture risk,” the researchers noted.
