Tailored Statin Interventions Help Prevent CAD Events
A tailored treatment strategy appears to help prevent more coronary artery disease (CAD) events while treating fewer people with high-dose statins than LDL cholesterol-based target approaches, according to a national study. Researchers compared tailored treatments based on a person’s 5-year CAD risk with treat-to-target approaches that escalate statin doses per National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) III guidelines. When compared with a standard NCEP III approach, an intensive NCEP III approach treated 15 million more people and saved 570,000 more quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) over 5 years. The tailored strategy treated a similar number of persons, but saved 500,000 more QALYs and treated fewer people with high-dose statins.
