Managing SBOs Without Surgery |
|
Investigators in Boston have found that patients with high-grade small bowel obstructions (SBO) appear to be managed safely with nonoperative therapy. Researchers reported that 46% of patients with high-grade SBO diagnosed by CT criteria were successfully managed nonoperatively; 54% required an operation. Length of stay and complications were significantly increased in the operative group when compared to those who did not have surgery. The authors added, however, that higher recurrence rates and shorter times to recurrence were associated with nonoperative management.
