Late Labor Induction Ups Complications
Among women who undergo induction of labor, the risk of cesarean delivery and maternal morbidity—even when a second stage of labor is reached—appears to remain elevated when the length of the first stage of labor induction is longer than 24 hours. According to a University of California, San Francisco study, women with first stages of labor lasting longer than 12 hours had a higher risk of cesarean delivery during the second stage; those with a first stage of 24 hours or more also had higher odds of postpartum, hemorrhage, chorioamnionitis, and neonatal admission to the intensive care nursery.
