Predicting Cardiovascular Events & Mortality |
|
The associations of BMI and waist circumference with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk appear to be strong. A study has found that overweight and obesity appear to have a stronger impact on fatal CVD than on non-fatal CVD. Absolute risk of non-fatal CVD was about 10 times higher than that of fatal CVD. In obese respondents, the relative risk of fatal CVD was four-fold higher; risk of non-fatal CVD was twice as high as normal-weight respondents. Similar associations were observed for waist circumference. In overweight or obese people, half of all fatal CVD and 25% of non-fatal CVD were ascribed to their overweight.
